Reason 1) No need to evacuate my apartment yet.Last year in May the Crown Paper company building was being torn down to make a new apartment complex. Seeing as how I didn't have to drive by it to get to and from work, the construction didn't really affect me.
One day, I noticed everyone was being stopped by policemen maybe a quarter of a mile before the turn in to my apartment. When it got to my turn, the cop checked my license to verify my address and told me I had to park along side the road where he was.
"There's been a gas leak. We have to evacuate the area."
I had just come from the grocery store and had salmon and ice cream to put away so I walked what ended up being a half mile to my apartment, put my stuff away. I was super exhausted that day and really just wanted to nap. I called Unfriendly about what was going on before heading off to nap land so he'd know what to expect on the way home. I didn't smell gas. There were still several people in the apartment complex too, so I didn't think I really HAD to evacuate. Unfriendly turned serious when I told him what was going on,
"You have to get out of there RIGHT NOW"
Mere seconds later, there was a knock on the door. It was another police officer. She told me they were busing folks out to
EMU's Bowen Field. I asked her if there would be any facilities for people with pets. She wasn't sure.
No way was I going to leave my cats to suffer any possible peril so I was faced with these 2 challenges.
- Where the heck was I gonna go?
My work schedule was and is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm provided I take a half hour for lunch. It was about 4:15 pm when the officer knocked. The couple of friends that I have locally weren't going to be home until maybe 5:30 - 6:00 pm.
Solution: I called Unfriendly back and told him I was headed toward his work parking lot since I had no place to go, really.
- How to transport 22 pounds of cat half a mile to where I parked my car?

Neither of my cats are really fans of the cat carrier but at least Pumpkin is more good natured about change than Pooky. I loaded them both into their carriers and took them both out into the hallway along with the handtruck.
Now, this horribly crappy apartment were we all lived had no ramp for handicapped tenants. Our apartment was garden level so we had a flight upstairs to go up to exit. So, I took the hand truck out first and figured that Pooky would freak out less if I took him out last. Wrong. He saw that Pumpkin and I were vanishing from his line of sight, the emitted the most horrible and loud meow ever. Poor guy probably thought I was abandoning him.
I proceeded to stack the carriers on top of each other and strap them in tight and then I wheeled my way down the road to get to my car. By this time, all of the other residents had been visited by Lady Cop so they were also evacuating. And boy was I getting some funny looks. A group of students from Nigeria in particular thought I had lost my mind and one of the guys started joking with me
"Can I buy one of your cats? Please? Come on! "
I imagine if Pooky wasn't meowing his head off, I might have been less conspicuous.
Ok, maybe NOT.
I finally got to my car and loaded the felines in. The hand truck was a bit cumbersome but I finally managed. I did stop somewhere to buy a new litter pan, litter and some conciliatory canned food along with a bottle of water. When we got to Unfriendly's work parking lot, I let them out of the carriers to wander the car. Pumpkin had a ball. She is really the coolest cat on the planet. She was purring away excitedly. She kept darting away to check out each windowed area of the car and then coming back to me to head butt me in gratitude. Weird cat.
Pooky thought it would be stellar to try to hide under the car pedals and close his eyes because this couldn't be happening to him. His kitty cat world had been shattered. He was freaked out. Not even canned food won him over (Pumpkin ended up eating his share). By the time Unfriendly got out of work, he was slightly calmer and ever so confused as to why 'Daddy' was in this new freakish hell environment.
I had been listening to NPR on EMU's radio station because during breaks, they were updating all on the gas break. It was here that I found out that the construction crew that had been tearing down the paper company caused this mess by breaking a gas line.
Unfriendly went to grab some Wendy's and returned. We sat in his truck and ate dinner. I had parked right next to him. The kitties were so confused as to why we weren't with them. Pumpkin had successfully covered my front passenger seat with fur and eventualy decided napping was more worthwhile than pondering about the situation. Pooky made sure to keep looking at us to make sure we weren't leaving him for good.
Finally a little after 9:00 pm we heard that all was clear and made our way back. Talk about a tiring day.
I did some research to see if anyone ever reported on this and they did (
http://www.easternecho.com/cgi-bin/story.cgi?1616 ) However, the apt. complex where we all lived in at the time is not mentioned as having had to evacuate in this article. We did.
